A quick look at China's online train schedules demonstrates the childish environment of management in the country! The rapidly expanding (and impressive) rail network has very little (if no) sense of information management when it comes to the distribution of schedule information.
Youngsters are told to create the schedule information however management have zero concept of managing the youngsters (nor oversight of the work being done) so the result is a significant failure. I won't say 'embarrassing' failure because management are completely unaware of the issue.
The result of this site's search for trains from Shanghai to Suzhou Yuanqu is far from correct, more than 50% of the trains are omitted altogether and nearly 80% of the train times are incorrect.

Hi,
I want to travel from Beijing to Xi'an and then to Shanghai. I've heard that you can buy Z-train-tickets 20 days in advance. Is it also possible to buy the tickets from outside China? Are the soft sleeper in Z-trains sold out very fast? I'm travelling around in China from 3rd Sept.
Thanks a lot!

For a traveller, it's a good choice to ask your hotel to booking train ticket for you. Most hotels in China have paid service of train ticket booking.
